The Kyle Hyland Foundation (KHF) for Teen Support is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2020 R.I.S.E Benicia KHF Scholarships. R.I.S.E. stands for Recognizing, Individuality with Support and Empowerment and the scholarship is focused on supporting those students who have worked diligently to overcome obstacles or hardships in their lives. This scholarship was established from a partnership between the KHF and the Benicia March of our Lives, from which excess funds were used to establish the scholarship fund.
This year’s scholarship applicants were required to submit an essay on the subject of bullying. The scholarship committee, which was comprised of a panel of Benicia residents, was extremely pleased to have so many deserving students apply for the scholarship. Initially, the intent had been to award two $500 scholarships but the decision was made to increase the awards when a generous anonymous donation was received.
The recipients of the 2020 R.I.S.E Benicia KHF Scholarship are as follows: Jose Torres ($1500) who will be attending Diablo Valley Community College in the fall and plans to eventually transfer to a university to study nursing; Sofia Arroyo ($750) who will be studying nursing at Case Western Reserve University in the fall and hopes to become a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner; and Isis Iverson ($750) who will attend Solano Community College in the fall and also plans to pursue a nursing degree. Jose, Sofia and Isis have also graciously agreed to be judges for the 2021 scholarship.
These students are well deserving and we wish them all the best in their future endeavors. Congratulations again to Jose, Sofia and Isis!
